Associate Professor Mark A. Bassett, PhD, is a Higher Education leader and academic innovator committed to advancing quality, integrity, and fairness in an era of rapid technological change. He serves as Director, Academic Quality, Standards, and Integrity and Academic Lead (Artificial Intelligence) at Charles Sturt University.
Mark is recognised as a leading voice on the use of artificial intelligence in Higher Education. He was an expert contributor to TEQSA’s Enacting assessment reform in a time of artificial intelligence and he developed the S.E.C.U.R.E. GenAI Use Framework for Staff, which he presented at the inaugural AI in Education conference at Oxford University. Mark is an advocate for ethical approaches to AI integration in education, and his work exposing the flaws of AI detection software, including Heads we win, tails you lose: AI detectors in education, has influenced sector understanding of fairness and due process in the age of AI.
His extensive international experience includes serving as Academic Director, Education Partnerships at SAE Global, where he oversaw academic quality across nine international campuses, navigating complex multi-accreditation regulatory environments. With over 17 years in Higher Education leadership, he has taught at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom, and the United Arab Emirates, developing a unique understanding of diverse educational systems and regulatory frameworks.
A self-taught programmer and EdTech developer, Mark has created innovative learning tools, including award-winning virtual audio console simulations and AI-powered technical ear training software. He previously led curriculum redesign in the United States and taught audio engineering for over a decade in multiple countries.
Before working in Higher Education, he spent more than ten years at Turtlerock Mastering in Sydney, where he worked at the forefront of commercial audio production.
